In the story of “Civil Peace”, Jonathan gets 20 pounds for
the saved rebel money he had turned over to the Treasury. However, during the
night, men identified as thieves showed up in his house to demand 100 pounds
from him. Since he only had 20 pounds, he handed it over to them leaving him
with nothing but his own life again.
